The ProSoft MVI56E-MCM/MCMXT is a single-slot enhanced Modbus communication module designed for Rockwell 1756 ControlLogix chassis. It enables ControlLogix PAC to communicate with field instruments and controllers supporting Modbus RTU and Modbus ASCII serial protocols. It has two independent serial ports, and each port can be flexibly set as Modbus master or slave separately, which supports two separate Modbus serial networks running at the same time. The module provides RS232, RS422 and RS485 electrical interfaces, with adjustable baud rate ranging from 110 baud to 115200 baud, and users can configure parity, data bits and stop bits to match the serial settings of connected devices. The internal shared register database supports up to 5000 16-bit registers for flexible data mapping between Modbus devices and ControlLogix tags. The MVI56E-MCM is the standard version for normal industrial environments, while MVI56E-MCMXT is the rugged variant with conformal coating and wide temperature rating, built for Logix-XT platforms and harsh, corrosive field locations. It is equipped with a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port supporting CIPconnect and built-in web server, so engineers can complete remote configuration, online diagnosis and firmware upgrade through the EtherNet/IP network. The data exchange between the module and the ControlLogix processor runs asynchronously over the backplane, so the Modbus polling and response processing will not affect the controller scan cycle and real-time control logic. It is fully backward compatible with the older MVI56-MCM, so users can replace the old module directly without rewriting the original control program. Add-on instructions and sample ladder logic are provided for RSLogix 5000 and Studio 5000, and ProSoft Configuration Builder software is used to edit master command lists, serial parameters and data mapping tables.

This module can be installed in local or remote 1756 ControlLogix chassis and draws 800mA at 5VDC from the backplane. It supports hot-swappable operation for on-site replacement without shutting down the whole rack. The front panel has a 4-character scrolling LED display to show plain text status and fault prompts for fast on-site inspection and troubleshooting. It supports CF personality card to save all configuration files, which helps quick recovery and spare module swap. The operating temperature range of MVI56E-MCM is 0°C to 60°C, and MVI56E-MCMXT supports -25°C to 70°C. Both versions adopt industrial EMC protection design against surge and electrostatic interference, and meet shock and vibration standards for industrial automation sites. It supports configuration backup and remote firmware upgrade to reduce maintenance workload.

This Modbus serial communication module is widely used in water treatment, petrochemical, energy monitoring, packaging machinery and harsh environment automation renovation projects. It adds native Modbus RTU and ASCII serial connectivity to ControlLogix without deploying extra standalone protocol converters, simplifying cabinet layout and serial bus wiring. As a discontinued legacy module, the MVI56E-MCM/MCMXT is mainly supplied as spare replacement parts for running automation systems.
