The ProSoft MVI56-S3964R is a single-slot serial communication module built for Rockwell 1756 ControlLogix chassis, designed for point-to-point data exchange based on Siemens 3964R protocol, supporting both standard 3964R mode and 3964R with RK512 mode. It comes with two independent application serial ports PRT1 and PRT2, supporting RS232, RS422 and RS485 interfaces, and the baud rate can be adjusted from 300 baud up to 115200 baud, with configurable parity, data bits and stop bits to match the serial settings of old Siemens controllers and third-party devices. In RK512 mode, the module supports DB-SEND and DB-FETCH instructions to read and write Siemens data blocks directly. In normal 3964R mode, it realizes block-based bidirectional data transmission, and the maximum data transfer length per transmission is 512 bytes. BCC checksum is adopted to guarantee data integrity during transmission, and byte swapping function is available to adapt to different word storage formats of connected devices. It has an extra RS232 configuration port for local parameter download, online diagnosis and debugging. The data exchange between the module and ControlLogix processor runs asynchronously over the backplane, so the serial handshake and data transmission process will not occupy the controller scan time and interfere with real-time control logic. Multiple MVI56-S3964R modules can be installed in one chassis within the power supply limit of the rack. Sample ladder logic is provided for RSLogix 5000, and users can complete port configuration, communication mode selection and data mapping through text configuration files.

This module can be installed in local or remote 1756 ControlLogix chassis and draws 800mA at 5VDC from the backplane. It supports hot-swappable operation for on-site replacement without shutting down the whole rack. Multiple LED indicators display module health, backplane transfer status, application running status and serial communication activity for fast on-site inspection and troubleshooting. The operating temperature range is 0°C to 60°C, storage temperature from -40°C to 85°C. It meets industrial shock and vibration standards, with 30g shock under operation and 5g vibration from 10Hz to 150Hz. It adopts industrial EMC protection against surge and electrostatic interference, and supports configuration file backup and firmware upgrade for routine maintenance.

This 3964R serial module is widely used in old Siemens control system renovation, petrochemical, power plant and water treatment legacy upgrade projects. It enables ControlLogix to communicate with traditional Siemens PLCs and instruments that only support 3964R serial protocol without external independent protocol converters. As a discontinued legacy communication module, the MVI56-S3964R is mainly supplied as spare replacement parts for running automation systems. It maintains stable point-to-point serial data transmission, preserves the original old control devices and serial field wiring, and reduces the renovation cost of legacy automation system integration.
